Schedule of the First Workshop of Maps for Making Change - Using Geographical Mapping Techniques to Support Struggles for Social Justice in India


9:30-10:00: Registration

Arrival and registration of participants


10:00–10.45: Welcome & Introductions

  • Welcome by CIS and TTC
   Short introductions on CIS and TTC
   Housekeeping
  • Ice-breaker activity: divide participants into two groups, one forming an outer circle and the other forming an inner circle, facing each other. Rotate the inner circle every 2 minutes, giving opportunities for participants to introduce themselves. Once the round is completed, then reconvene as a larger group.
  • Outline the purpose and outcomes of the workshop
  • Present workshop agenda
  • Provide participants with TTC's guides


10.45-12:00: Why Mapping?

  • Reading maps politically
   Presentation and discussion (led by Jai Sen, CACIM)
  • How has mapping evolved in the recent years?
   Short history of web mapping
   Types of maps
   Advantages and disadvantages of web maps
  • Maps – how they are used
   Group exercise: Divide the group into 5-6 small groups to answer the exercise questions.


12:00-1:00: Lunch


1:00-2:00: Mapping and Advocacy Discussion

  • Continue exercise from previous session
  • 'Mapping' as a tool for advocacy
  Each group will spend 20 minutes discussing:
  * What are the advantages and disadvantages of using maps in the examples presented in the previous group exercise?
  * What type of data/information are shown and how were they collected?
  * How effective are the maps in communicating the advocacy message?  Do the maps have the same effectiveness in India?     
  * What can be done differently if you were working with rural populations or people who are disconnected from the internet and digital media?
  • Reconvene to a larger group and ask a representative from each group to share what their group discussed


2:00-3:00: How do you 'map'? Basic tools and techniques

  • Present different technologies and tools used to create maps (Google Map API, Google Earth, Open Street Maps, Open Source GIS, flash maps) as well as additional mapping features such as adding video, web links, etc
   Show examples
  • Allow 30 minutes for participants to discuss data collection issues and mapping strategy (audience, purpose)


3:00-3:30: Tea Break


3:30-5:00: Project scoping

  • Guide participants to develop their ideas for the mapping project
   How would you use the information you have to create a map?
   What type of map (static, interactive) would be suited for this?
   What type of technologies could be used to create this map?
   What other information could be collected and shown on the map?
   What political or social implications do you think would result from the map?
   Are there any privacy or security issues to be considered?
  • Group Activity:
   Ask each participant to spend 20 minutes writing or sketching down their idea, including possible data sources
   Place each participant's sketches/paper on tables or wall like a world cafe style
   Ask participants to spend time looking at other people's ideas and write down suggestions and comments


5:00-5:30: Summary

  • Reconvene, allow for time for participants to provide feedback, and summarise key points of the workshop
  • Outline steps for the next phase:
   For each participant to think about the type of data/information they need to collect for their mapping projects
   Date & location of next workshop
   Group mailing list
  • Distribute workshop evaluation forms and give participants the time to fill it out
  • Thank the participants!
